When I picked this book up I was not sure what to think.
I am not a scuba diver at all – even though I loved swimming. So I wasn’t sure
how to approach this. But it turned out to be a beautiful book that I loved and
flew right through.
When Catherine Fitzgerald, an underwater photographer, buys
an antique Claddagh ring, she is troubled by nightmares that set her on a path
to fulfill a promise of love made centuries before. As she begins to unravel
the mystery of the woman who haunts her dreams, she has to come to grips with
her own struggle to find true love. Will it be her ex, psychiatrist Richard
Egan, who still loves her, or Daniel Costello, the handsome but unavailable
marine archaeologist on the dive team?
Set in Provence, Manhattan, and Ireland, this romantic
mystery exposes not only two women’s longings, but also the beauty of the deep,
where buried treasures tempt salvagers to break the law.
This book had a beautiful balance between
descriptions, characters and romance. I have never been to Ireland but from the
beautiful description of setting I feel as if I have been! It also dug into
history quite a bit with a mystery from the past waiting to be solved, and the
Claddagh ring. On top of that, there is a mention of reincarnation and psychic
happenings. I recently read a book called The Bridge Of Deaths, and I couldn’t
like it as much because of that theme running through the book. However, I
thought it worked well for this story and wasn’t overdone at all, which made me
able to sail through it.
Catherine was a lovely character. She cared a lot for
her daughter and her farm, but she also misses the busy life. She is interested
in history and mystery, and loves to admire the beauty in life. Yes, she is
torn between choosing the guy she wants, who happens to already be taken, or
returning to her ex-husband. As well as trying to solve a mystery, catch a
criminal and take great underwater photos, she is also busy chasing after her
heart. I loved her loyalty and determination. Occasionally her mind would leap
to erotic thoughts out of nowhere, which I found a bit out of character, but
otherwise she was brilliant!
The romance was twisted enough for us to never know
which she might end up with or where it was going, and never too steamy that it
became erotic. But it was sweet and there, and written very well. I loved
reading it. The relationships between the characters is what made this such a
fab read.
I recommend this to everyone who loves a good romance,
good character relationships and a beautiful setting. I have rated it a 4/5
stars! I can’t wait to read more of Diana Stevan’s books.

Olivia’s Question: Have you ever been scuba diving or
swimming in the ocean? What was your experience like?
Olivia-Savannah x
Hi there, Olivia - sounds like Catherine's life was very busy. Also seems she was seeking answers for herself. Glad you enjoyed it. :) To answer your question, I've never been scuba diving, but have always loved being near the water.
ReplyDeleteI think water is awesome too! Maybe you will get to try scuba diving someday :) I would like to believe that we are all seeking answers for ourselves.
DeleteCatherine sounds like a great character to read about and her depth of caring an element making her even more likable
ReplyDeleteYes, I really loved reading about her!
DeleteI was lucky enough to read an early version of this -- can't wait to get my hands on a finished copy! Love the beautiful setting in Ireland. (I've never been scuba diving, but I love the ocean, so I really enjoy the underwater-photography part of the story, too.)
ReplyDeleteYes, me too! The setting was done and described wonderfully, and Ireland sounds like a wonderful place. :)
DeleteI love to read anything that is set in Ireland! I have a rich Celtic heritage, and Ireland has always called to me. This book sounds wonderful, scuba diving has always been a dream of mine! I definitely added it to my TBR list, and maybe I'll win the giveaway! Wonderful review Olivia, as always (:
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that is really cool! This is definitely the book for you, and I wish you well with the giveaway!
DeleteOh! This sounds wonderful. I read another book with a similar theme set in Scotland not long back, but for the life of me I cannot remember the title. I will come back and comment if I can remember.
ReplyDeleteI hope you do get a chance to remember! This book was certainly worth reading. :)
DeleteHow can you not want to read a book like this? Romance, underwater, Ireland, pure enjoyment. Rolling hills of Ireland :D oh thank you for the giveaway and good luck!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't see how you can't! I hope you do well in the giveaway :3
DeleteI just love the cover of this book. The description is intriguing and your review of it has heightened my curiosity. I'm a diver and can hardly wait to see what she's done with the underwater scenes. Thanks for sharing. A Cry from the Deep is on my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteA diver! That's so cool! This book is the perfect match for you, then :)

ReplyDeleteMy first wedding ring was a claddagh. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI think those are gorgeous <3
DeleteI've never been swimming or scuba diving in the ocean. I don't know how to swim. I'd love to learn though! :) and then get into all sorts of adventure sports.
ReplyDeleteAww, I hope you do get the chance to swim in an ocean! Learning to swim is super fun, and one thing I love doing.
DeleteUnderwater photography! That is hook enough for me :)
ReplyDeleteYou pick really interesting books to review!
Thanks, I do try to read a variety of books! Underwater photography in a novel was something I haven't seen before, which is why this sounded so interesting!
DeleteGreat review! I really love the synopsis for this. Haven't heard of it before now, so thank you for bringing it to my attention =)
ReplyDeleteIt's a really good book ^.^ I hope you get a chance to look into it.
DeleteNever. I always found scuba-diving books hard because of all the deep description and info dumps. The one thing about writing about beautiful places is that there is always so much to write. I think, during this blog, you helped me see beyond this. I think it was mainly your description of the romance that took my mind off worrying about info dumps and scenery.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about this book is that it manages to include the information we need to know, describe the scenery beautifully and manage to not go on and on about it. Diana Stevan has found the perfect balance.
DeleteOlivia, thank you so much for hosting a giveaway for A CRY FROM THE DEEP. I would've dropped by sooner, but since my book has just been launched, I've been busy making sure that everything was working properly on Amazon. Plus, I have my reading tonight at our local library, so I needed to prepare.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading the comments here. Pleased to see so much interest in Catherine, scuba diving, and Ireland. It was a fabulous experience doing the research.
No problem, Diana. It was my honor to review such a good book! I hope all this work towards launching has been going well, and that your reading does as well,
DeleteI've never heard of this book before but you make it sound so good! Your blog is not good for my TBR list!
ReplyDeletexD I hope you enjoy it! It is a book worth your time <3
