Conformity - Dead Poets Society 2/5

Hi there!

Are you ready for the second discussion post based off life lessons you can gather from Dead Poets Society? Last week we talked about seizing the day, and now I would love to talk about conformity.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, the idea of conformity is shown in the best way possible. Three people are told to march after each other, one behind the other. And after marching for a little while, they all start marching to the same beat. One boy claps along to this beat, and soon all the others are too. What is later pointed out is that they have all conformed to what the others were doing around them, and none of them were being original.

And I think there are many of us who are like that in the world. I have been thinking about it lately, and even managed to write a poem down about it. Conformity can happen to anyone at any time. We see people wearing the same type of clothing, so we try it out too. People like this movie, so let’s go see it ourselves. Everyone hates Twilight? Well, let’s hate it too. (Okay, yes I love Twilight. So yes, I put that example in there xD)

Let’s make the decision to be ourselves from now on. Even the Bible (Romans 12:2) tells us not to conform, and you don't have to be a believer to believe that ^^

There may be different ways that each person goes about doing this, so I can’t really tell you what exactly to do. But I can help you a little bit. Every morning, say this to yourself

My name is _.

I believe _.

And today I am going to show it. I will not conform.

I could even do it myself. So to the blogger world:

My name is Olivia.

I believe in my God Almighty, I believe reading is a way of life and music is something that fuses me with energy. I write all my emotions down because I rubbish at sharing them verbally, and I write a diary to make sense of my muddle of thoughts. I love my blog and believe there is always something you could be doing and I think sleep can be really boring and takes up time.

These are things I believe, and I won’t let anyone change them.

Olivia’s Question: What is one way you think you have conformed to society in? How can you claim this back?

  1. Hi Olivia - I like the message you posted. Too many of us conform for one reason or another. Peer pressure is the most likely reason even as adults. Thanks for the post! :)

    1. Yes. And being at secondary school right now I know peer pressure pretty well. I hope this helps :)

  2. This is a really powerful message you are trying to send. I think I'm conforming to society every time I act the way it's expected of me although it's not the way I wish to act. I can't give a concrete example, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

    1. It's okay if you can't. I hope that when you are in another one of those moments you can act more for yourself than anyone else.

  4. This is a really great thoughtful post Olivia, it's so true how we tend to mimick each other's behaviour in society. We are all individuals, yet some of us are afraid to stand out. Lovely topic!

  5. I totally agree with you !
We are all different and should always be ourselves, not imitations of others.

  6. Amazing post! There are so many people who throw aside their own beliefs and likes for what society deems acceptable (myself included). A little effort can change things. Thanks for the post :)

  7. Great thoughts, Olivia! I agree with you. However, as much as some of us want to follow our own beliefs or stand out or be unique, most of us are afraid of society's judgment to us, thus we follow what they think is acceptable and by doing so we gradually lose ourselves because what we're doing is no longer about us. And that is scary because it's like becoming a puppet or something. Anyway, great topic! :)

  9. I agree as well with you and I think you wrote it beautifully! People are always telling us how to behave, to dress, even what to read sometimes but what makes us different is our opinions and our way of thinking. And I do admit that sometimes I do follow rules society impose on me but I always try and be myself, even though it can be hard ^^

    1. I think it's good that you are always trying to be yourself. Our opinions are the key thing that make us unique ;)

  10. Great post and a very important message. I am sure there are many times when I have conformed for one reason or another. Even though what would truly make me happy would be to just march to the beat of my own drum and not worry about others.

  11. My whole childhood, I was looking for a best friend like everybody else. One that you could paint your nails with or gossip about other boys with. The whole time I never realized the best friend I had right in front of me that I could be myself too, who cares about your average girly best friend relationship. I absolutely loved your bit at the end. It showed the message so clearly, and it was rather powerful. These are some amazing messages,, and you explaining and expressing them in this way is heart-lifting. I think the quotes in this film is an amazing and interesting topic, one you can lots with and go into a lot of depth.

    1. This film has a lot of different aspects and life lessons in it to be treasured. I wanted to include that bit at the end so that I could throw my opinions and beliefs our there. I am glad this blog makes me able to do that.
