Callie Ingram is spending her senior year focused on one
thing: swimming. Her skill as a competitive swimmer is going to secure a
scholarship and her future, or so she hopes. She has big plans, and Liam Hale,
her gorgeous new neighbor, isn’t going to affect them. But when Callie sees
Liam beheading someone, she learns his family has a secret that will change
everything. The Hales are Vikings, demi-gods who’ve been charged by The Fates
to find their new destined leader.
Callie’s caught in the middle of a budding Norse
apocalypse, in love with Liam Hale and desperate to protect her best friend…
who the Hales believe is marked for transformation. Putting the clues together
as fast as she can, can discovers she has the power to rewrite destiny, for
herself and all humankind.
Review: This
was a pretty good read, and one that was hard to rate. It was pretty good, but
it wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t horrible either. It was a quick read that I
enjoyed, with an interesting plot and a romance story that kept me turning
pages. This is a paranormal romance, and the paranormal aspect of things was
done very well.
We have the main character Callie who I really liked. She
was someone who didn’t want to stand idle while everything was going on around
her. Even though she was out of her depth she wanted to help, and held strong
for her friends and family. As well as that she was a swimmer, and I always
like seeing women doing sports in novels for some reason. Maybe because it
doesn’t happen too much. She develops a bit in this novel, from someone who is
bullied at school and keeps their head down to someone more confident, fiery
and willing to do what it takes.
Liam was a nice love interest, but I didn’t feel much for
him as a character. In fact, I wasn’t too interested in the Hales. They were
cool and all, but I much preferred Callie’s best friend, Justin. He was such a
nice guy! Slow, patient and always looking out for his best mate. I wouldn’t
have minded a friend like him ;)
As for the plot, there is a bit of Greek and Norse
mythology in there. The Stians were a new type of villain for me. They were
monsters who looked like people and claimed women, destroying them to harm
their Guardians. They formed a sort of clan with which they hope to take over
the world. It was up to the Hales and other Guardians (demigods) to stop that
from happening. I feel like Julie explained the situation very well and gave us
everything we’d need to know to understand, which was good.
To me the ending felt a little bit rushed, and I didn’t completely
understand what went done at the final battle, but afterwards we get a kind of
‘debriefing’ of sorts and that was helpful. Overall a pretty good book, and I
will hopefully be reading the next one in the series when it’s published.

Olivia’s Question: If you had to be the demigod child of
one Greek god/goddess, which would it be?

Good review! I'm particularly interesting in the mix between Greek and Norse mythology because it is indeed a weird combination but I love them both separately and I'm pretty sure I would like them both together hahahaha
ReplyDeleteAnd if I had to be a demigod child.... I would like to have Poseidon as father simply because I love water and I want to control it. It's true I'm a bit scared of the ocean because it is huge and so deep but being a child of Poseidon would help ^^
Yes! I don't know much about Norse mythology (although I do know a bit more now) but I do love Greek mythology! Poseidon is one of my favourites. I think I would like to have Athena, a strong woman! Battle strategy and wisdom all the way!
DeleteNorse mythology is so interesting. I ended up taking a World Mythology class last semester and I absolutely loved it. The Norse are a lot different in regards to their beliefs. They actually were the ones to introduce the idea of angels, which they called Valkyries into religion. They believed that when Viking warriors died, they were carried from the battlefields by these Valkyries and into the gates of Asgard! (:
DeleteOh wow, that does sound pretty interesting! I like the idea of a World Mythology class as well :D I know a bit about Asgard (you know, the Thor movies and all) but that was all I knew about the Norse mythology.
DeleteVikings! Oh boy! :) Too bad that it fell short foe you
ReplyDelete:(
Yes! The idea of Vikings was definitely something new and I liked it. It would've been nice to have that reflected on the cover as well, though. It was an okay read :3
DeleteJust from reading your review, I think I like the character of Justin, too (Callie’s best friend). He sounds like the type of friend we could all use. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Justin was a dear <3
DeleteI've had this book on my TBR for a while now, but haven't gotten around to reading it. I love the idea of Vikings.. I've been watching this show called America, Unearthed, where the host tries to prove that various groups came to America before Columbus. He did a show on the Vikings and I've been dying to read more about them ever since! This sounds like something that I would totally love. Thank you for the review girl.. I'm definitely going to check this book out sooner than I would have. Muah!

Glad it has encouraged you to try it out! I will definitely be looking into this show as well because it sounds like it could be interesting! Looking forward to your review of it ;)
DeleteYou did a great job of reviewing this. I always struggle with the books that I thought were just kind of okay, not awful but not amazing. This does seem interesting, but not so good that I'd want to buy it for myself.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more, those are definitely the hardest type of books to review! Thank you :)
DeleteI've never read any books with Norse mythology before, but I'm excited to!
ReplyDeleteThis was a first for me too. But not for greek mythology.
DeleteParanormal books are one of the best out there :D I'm glad you liked this book, and fab review!

Yes, every now and again I love a good paranormal read!
DeleteWow that's pretty cool- Norse, Greek. I love Mythology. And Paranormal- I can find that in most books. :D
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an awesome book for you, then. Because I follow your blog, I'm sure this is something you'd like!
DeleteLike the sound of Callie and that she is an action person instead of watching whats happeneing but sad to hear that the book overall wasn't amazing
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am all for main characters who put their own effort into trying when it comes to being part of the action.
DeleteLike the sounds of the mythology but I don't really want to read a okay book, you know?
ReplyDeleteYeah, nowadays I am also more choosy when it comes to what I pick up.
DeleteThis sounds pretty cool, great review!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I tagged you to do The Creatures of The Night Tag here
Thank you for the tag! I am looking forward to filling it out :3
DeleteThanks for reviewing this! I'm a fan of mythology so anything with hints of it here and there tend to catch my interest. Really loving the quote you put up on the Greek expression too.
ReplyDeleteI remembered seeing it on Pinterest and when I wrote this I just knew it needed to be included! Maybe this book is for you ;3
DeleteNice blurb
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteIt's funny but the bit about missing someone, it's the same in Bulgarian - Липсваш ми :)
ReplyDeleteYou speak Bulgarian? And that also sounds so nice <3
DeleteIsn't that worst? When you're neither wow'd nor disappointed in the book? So hard to review those kind of reads.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the books that fall in the middle of the rating scale are always the most difficult!
DeleteI don't remember hearing of this one. It sounds like it is a good book overall, but it could be one that someone else loves (since the writing is good). :) I love the quote about I miss you in Greek. That makes a lot of sense to me.

I would agree with you. It wasn't quite my thing but I am sure people who appreciate Paranormal more might like it more than I did.
