you to the publisher for sending me a copy for review*
Marguerite refuses to let the man who destroyed her family go free. So she races after Paul through different universes, always leaping into another version of herself. But she also meets alternate versions of the people she knows—including Paul, whose life entangles with hers in increasingly familiar ways. Before long she begins to question Paul's guilt—as well as her own heart. And soon she discovers the truth behind her father's death is far more sinister than she expected.
A Thousand Pieces of You, the first book in the Firebird trilogy, explores an amazingly intricate multiverse where fate is unavoidable, the truth elusive, and love the greatest mystery of all.
Review: Wow. I just loved this and read it super quickly!
After reading and enjoying
Claudia Gray’s Evernight series a few
years back, and absolutely falling in love with this gorgeous cover (just look
at it!) I needed to read this. The idea of traveling between dimensions and a
captivating romance intrigued me from the beginning. I just had to read this!
And it didn’t let me down either.
The action was amazing, and the
mystery behind everything. I liked the idea of traveling between dimensions to
find her father’s murder was a brilliant one. The action and mystery unraveled
gradually and always kept me on my toes as to who had done it. At first the
answer to the case seems black and white, but in the end it was more
complicated than I could’ve presumed.
The science behind this seemed
legit enough, even though I am not too amazing at science and it was kind of
over my head. But from what I did read, it seemed to make enough sense. Also,
each dimension is creatively different. There is an underwater station, a
Russian historical period of time and a dimension much like earth as well. I
have to say the Russian period was definitely my favourite (what can I say? I
love a good historical fiction.) and was handled well.
The only shame was in the Russian
period where the main character spends the most time, the setting isn’t
developed very well. Sure, we see castles and we have guards, but the way she
acts and speaks, she could’ve been living in any old time and it would’ve still
seemed like this worked. I felt that although in some dimensions the setting
did play a role in the story, sometimes that could’ve been improved a bit.
The main characters were handled
well. We get to see a bit of Marguerite’s past life through flashbacks (which
were a bit abrupt and sudden in places) as much as we get to see the present.
She’s a determined girl who won’t let anyone tell her she can’t do anything,
and she lets herself be led by her heart a lot. Being the only creative one in
a family of scientists, I don’t find that too surprising ;) Paul and Theo were
also interesting characters, but I don’t want to say too much about that or I
might give the story away ^^ I think family was a big part of this novel too, and it was good to see that theme running through it.
The romance was BIG part of the
story, and a bigger part than predicted. But it was handled well, I loved it,
and of course, there was a love triangle. But I think the love triangle was
kind of necessary in Marguerite’s situation, and was executed wonderfully.
The plot twist at the end was
brilliant! I loved reading this, flew through it, and honestly cannot wait for
the second book in the series! Highly recommended.

Nice review Olivia! You are the first blogger I follow, and that I'm awared of, that has given this book 5 stars. The first thing that made me check out this book was the cover, not gonna lie and then I started to hear mixed things about the story, especially regarding the romance. Most didn't know it was gonna be a huge part of the plot but now that I know it wouldn't be a surprise so yeah! Also, I'm a bit disappointed about the world building not being the greatest...
ReplyDeleteBut maybe I give it a go, in the future =)
Yeah, the romance was definitely a surprise. The world building was a shame but I had to give it the full thing because I was addicted until I could finish the book!
DeleteHi Olivia - Yeah - the answer to a GOOD mystery is never black and white. Glad you enjoyed it; sounds great! :)
ReplyDeleteYou couldn't be more correct! That is exactly what makes a mystery perfect ;)
DeleteOk I think it's the way you review books that always makes me want to read them too! This sounds like a great book and a story that I would definitely like. Steffy xx
ReplyDeleteThank you! And I hope you do get a chance to try it out!

DeleteI read a review on this book some days back. I wanted to give it a try. Your review makes me think I must! :D
ReplyDeleteI hope you do! It's a book worth reading if you love YA :)
DeleteGirl you have me so pumped to read this! I am a bit surprised the romance plays a big part in a novel like this, but hey, I'm a contemporary/romance fan so it'll work for me! Great review Liv :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by <3 Glad this book seems to your liking, and I hope you enjoy it. I can see this being right up your street, actually.
DeleteI read this in a day and I can't wait for the sequel! However, I'm sort of pro-Theo and Marguerite...

DeleteWonderful review! I had this on my TBR list for a while now and I think I should get to it sooner than later :)
ReplyDeleteI hope that when you do try it you love it as much as I did.
DeleteI've read quite a few good reviews of this book, and I definitely want to read it! Glad that the science seemed legit - I'm one of those people who can let things slide as long as it seems reasonable that it could be true. :-)

Yeah, realism is important when it comes to novels like this! I hope you enjoy it when you try it ^^
DeleteThe cover for this book is so beautifull, however I don't think it's a book for me as I am not a fan of time or dimension travel. Sad to hear some of the dimensions aren't that well developed, world building can realy make or break a book for me. Beside that it sounds like a well written book. From the blurb I never would've thought the romance would play such a big part in this book.
ReplyDeleteI think the cover is amazing too. But one book isn't for everyone! World building is always important :3
DeleteI loved Claudia Gray's Fateful, the Titanic with werewolves novel. I haven't finished her Evernight series I think I have two more left including the Balthazar spin off. I am so glad you enjoyed this! Great review!! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Fateful yet, but I really enjoyed the Evernight series. Have fun reading her books :3
DeleteGreat review! I'm really excited to read this, and I just love the cover so much!

The cover is just so beautiful! <3
DeleteI think the shoes that do up themselves will be invented. I am already so interested in this book and can't wait to read it. The plot, at first, sounds a bit like Fountain of the Earth and then goes off on a complete different direction. The alternate dimension idea seems fantastic and I'm really anxious to see how the author did this. The whole plot with Paul also seems really interesting and exciting. Overall, this book seems like a major page turner and I can't turn down a good page reader, plus, the main character's name reminds me of Margarita pizza :) Great review, you made this book sound really appealing even though I knew I already wanted to read it, just from reading the blurb.
ReplyDeleteI had to buy my own print copy because I enjoyed reading this one so much! I loved it <3 And the alternate worlds are handled very well too.
