Make Up in Society (Guest Post & Giveaway!)

As a beauty blogger, you might well understand why for me, mascara is like underwear, I don't leave home without it. In fact, I can't remember the last time I stepped out in public without applying some sort of makeup product, and I would say that I have reasonably high self-confidence. Yet, why is it that in the society we live in, wearing makeup is viewed as a way of coping with and concealing your low self esteem. How is taking pride in your appearance "hurting" your confidence? How is putting on lip gloss another way of saying that you’re not satisfied with what you were born with.

Yes we all have insecurities, there's no doubting that, and although I understand why people may see makeup as a way of covering up low self esteem, as it allows us to cover up those insecurities, isn't covering up your blemishes to help you look your best the same as wearing a flattering dress on a night out? No one would point fingers as a girl in a pretty dress and claim that she is simply "hiding her low self-esteem behind the dress", rather, they would compliment her on how fantastic she looks,  so why is wearing makeup a different story?

 

The issue arises when women feel that they must wear makeup, once the element of choice is removed, then the problems arise. Our society is skewed as it is when it comes to the way women should look and act, so when people say that women can only look beautiful with a face full of makeup and in their best clothes, wearing makeup and wearing your best clothes suddenly lose their appeal.

 

Confidence levels drop when wearing makeup becomes a chore rather than a choice, when women are told by society that without it they are less than beautiful. It is society's expectation of women to wear makeup that makes it a bad, self-esteem lowering thing, rather than the act of wearing makeup itself.

In my opinion however, when freely chosen, makeup empowers a woman to present herself in exactly the way she chooses. It empowers a woman to say  “Here I am. I took three minutes today for myself because, you know what, I deserve it.” If that’s not demonstrating self-esteem, I don’t know what is.
