Review: Oh boy
did I love this book. It has SO much hype around it. So much that I was
prepared to be disappointed. I don’t usually fall in love with flat out
romances, and I had this book for years before I tried it.
And I fell in love with it. So much love that I was up
until 3am reading until I could finish those wonderful 400 pages.
When I started to read this one I worried that Anna was
going to be the typical teen. But in fact, I loved her voice and her character!
She was funny and smart and she was very realistic. Take this from someone who
is a teenager as well. We do act like
she does. I also really liked how much she loved watching movies, taking notes
and dissecting them for fun. It’s sort of like the way I like reading – so I
could relate to her in that aspect.
I loved the setting being in Paris. The best thing about
this book was that I read it right before we went to Paris ourselves! I took
notes of places to sight see because well, Anna manages to go to all the great
touristy places in the book, and you really get a taste of French from reading
this. So it did make me happy to see a unique setting done so very well.
I generally liked all the characters, really. Etienne or
St. Clair was just… a dreamy kind of guy. Definitely one of my book boyfriends
down to pat. He was a genuine kind of guy who had his own fair share of problems
and tried to live life with a positive outlook – and needed friends to help him
along the way. And yes, he was supposedly good
looking and all that, but the best thing about him was that he had his
fears and flaws as well. If anything, what I liked about the characters were
their imperfections. It made them realistic.
Meredith, Rashmi and Josh – they make up the main friends
group and I loved them all! But I can’t go into more detail because then this
review would be too long.
I liked the other themes that run into this book. There
is a bit about cancer – and done differently in most YA books because it isn’t
a main character suffering from it. And we don’t even get to first-handedly
meet the character who has it. But simply get to see how it affects those
related to the affected. That was unique. And then we have the theme of moving
away from home, and visiting back and things not being the exact same. Another
thing well done. Divorce theme as well.
I will admit that this book was very chick-lit and did
have predictable moments in them. But y’know what? I actually didn’t care about
the predictably because this book was just too CUTE. I am usually fussy about
romances in general but this one? It was perfection for me.
Yet, I am fully ready to admit that this book isn't without flaws. I have mentioned in a previous review of The Sky is Everywhere that I cannot really condone cheating in the novels I read. There was a bit of cheating going on in this novel, and I know it's a reason why so many other people dislike reading this one. I probably would've disliked reading it at any other time as well... but when I picked up this book, it was the exact time at which I needed a read like this. It's great when the perfect book comes around like that. But even in this five star review, I wanted to take a step back and mention that the cheating aspect is there and that might be a reason why you wouldn't enjoy reading this one.
Regardless, I did manage to really enjoy this novel. So please do give it a try?

Olivia’s Question: Do you sometimes read predictable books, and not care about the predictability?
Olivia-Savannah x

Funny enough the first time I read this book I really enjoyed it and although predictable I didn't mind it. However, after reading it I started thinking about it and my thoughts on the book changed. I still think it's a nice read but since then I found some stuff I'm not happy about
ReplyDeleteYes... I understand what you mean. This kind of novel sucks you in. I didn't realise how I wasn't a fan of the cheating aspect of the novel until afterwards with some hindsight...
DeleteI'm really not a chick-lit kinda person but I definitely would give this book a shot since you liked it so much!
ReplyDeleteMaybe it will be one you like. There are a lot of mixed thoughts on this series so I think it is really down to personal preferences in the end :)
DeleteOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I NEED THIS!!! When it comes to fiction, I'm often a teenager inside and the fact that you are raving about it must mean that it's good, too!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, as long as the story telling is not boring, I do love the predictability in chick-lit! Same goes for chick-flicks. It means that I can't be disappointed and I don't have to really use my brain either, so it is relaxing and happiness-inducing.
You should definitely go for this one if it sounds like the kind of thing you would enjoy! And I agree - as long as the story isn't boring, then I can still enjoy the journey to the ending even if I know what it is already. Relaxing, easy-going stories can be perfect too. :D
DeleteLol I ordered...
ReplyDeleteAlready? D: I hope you love it!
DeleteI am so glad that you enjoyed this one, Olivia. I still need to read it and have been meaning to for ages. I am not sure about the cheating in it though. Great review!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the cheating has me nervous about rereading it. But it's good to give it a try c:
DeleteI haven't had a chance to read this yet but I've heard such good things! I'll have to read it this year sometime! I've definitely read books that were entirely predictable (I think that's the motto of the romance and contemporary genres) but I didn't mind too much. I've been trying to set a new mindset for myself: its' the journey, not the destination. So even though I can predict the vast majority of endings, I try not to put too much stock in them and just try to enjoy the book itself :) Lovely review, Olivia!
ReplyDeleteLaura @BlueEyeBooks
Yeah, for romance and contemporary it mostly is predictable, which is why I don't mind when it comes to reads like this one. I have to agree - the journey is usually what I enjoy most about the novel anyway! Hope you get the chance to read this one soon ;)
DeleteYaaaay!!! I'm so happy you read this :D This book is so cute, because that's just the word really, it's adorable!! And the one thing that bothered me as well was the cheating part, it would have been better without that :/ I think he said he didn't want to be alone or something? And that's why he was still with his girlfriend? I just wanted to slap some sense into him :)
ReplyDeleteBut all in all this book is so entertaining and freaking cute!!
Lipstick and Mocha
It really is such a sweet read! Yeah, that was his reasoning - but I don't think any reasoning justifies cheating!
DeleteI'm so glad you loved this one, Olivia. I read it many years ago and I was easily taken in with the crew. I especially love Etienne and Anna (duh) but oh, the wait was so painful!
ReplyDeleteEtienne <3 I am glad you enjoyed it when you read it.
DeleteI also loved this one when I read it a couple of years ago!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm happy you could :D
DeleteGlad you enjoyed this book. :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes the predictability of the story bothers me but if the story line is good then I don't care so much.
Great review!
I am in the same boat as you. A good story line means I don't mind ;)
DeleteI haven't thought of reading this book because it seemed like it would be too cheesy, but your review has made me think to give it a chance. Although I don't like books that have people cheating in it, maybe I'll still like it!
ReplyDeleteThe title makes it sound incredibly cheesy, so I know what you mean. But I promise, it's a lot less cheesy than you might first believe ^.^
DeleteYou know I despised this book. LOL! It was just so "teenage soap-opera" to me. St. Clair made me want to slap him.
ReplyDeleteHehehe yes I know. I was wondering about you reading this review after you disliked it so much :P
DeleteI'm not sure. Sometimes the journey can be just as fun as the destination.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the journey is just as entertaining, I suppose :D
DeleteEnjoyed the review Olivia!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it :)
DeleteI agreed with a lot of things you said, I absolutely loved the book. I’m a sucker for anything in France so I’m sooo happy it didn’t let me down. From the characters, to the architecture, to the pastry’s I was instantly pulled in <3 it was a predictable book but that kinda made me enjoy it even more, and it really showed the characters development and many tender subjects like cancer and divorces.
ReplyDelete(I also finished the book at like 4 am, totally worth it)
