Review: YOU
GUYS. I finally read this book! I was kinda forced into reading it, because one
morning my mother told me that we were going to see the movie in the evening.
I’m very much the ‘read the book before watching the movie’ kind of person, so
I spent the entire morning reading until I had finished the book. Even though I
was rushing it a little, it didn’t matter, because I head over heels adored
reading this one. I was sucked right into the novel.
First of all, I thought this was going to be a horror
read. With that kind of cover, and the images which the book includes in it, my
mind had been made up. I’m pleased to let you know that while this one does
have the eerie kind of creepy feeling to it, this is actually more of a
paranormal young adult read than anything else. It isn’t horror related at all,
even though there are monsters in the book. So if you are skipping over this
book under the belief that it is just going to be too scary for you, then you
need to pick it up! You’re safe now ;)
Speaking of those images, the post cards and vintage
photos were a brilliant addition to the novel. It added a sense of realism to
the story, and they acted like illustrations to a novel. In fact, I have the
images stuck on my wall now. They are a bit creepy, but I like them. Weirdly
enough.
As for the plot and story itself, it’s very well done and
different from the movie! (I know this is the book review, but having read/seen
both, now I can’t avoid making those comparisons.) The story is quite slow going
in the beginning, as it takes Jacob, the protagonist, a while to stumble upon
the world and everything that is included in it. But once he does, the secrets
to their world are slowly unveiled, and the plot quicks in. Then a layer of
suspense is added, and the conclusion to the novel is quite good. I can’t wait
to go on and read the other two books in the story.
I especially loved the author’s writing style. His word
choice was very particular, and what added the most to the story. The idea of
using the word peculiarities, over powers, because it was more suited to what
the kids had, and made it more unique, was brilliant thinking. And generally,
when it came to his descriptions of things, I think the word choice was
spectacular. It was a joy to read this book.
There were themes of war and family issues in this novel.
Jacob doesn’t have the best family, and we can see this misunderstanding of
communication between him and his parents really getting to him. But he doesn’t
quite manage to solve and bridge that distance, which is actually quite
saddening to think about it. And after a while, his parents kind of fade out of
the picture. I hope this isn’t the last we hear of them in the stories,
otherwise that is quite a sad ending for the relationship he has with them. The
war themes were more so in the background rather than prominent. But they do
appear from time to time.
I really loved getting to know all the characters and all
their different peculiarities and personalities. I can’t wait to see where the
sequel will take me!

I'm not sure what I would do if my best friends all had powers. Such a hard question. I'd probably be a tiny bit jealous, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteI know I would be as well!
DeleteI would be so sad if all my friends had powers and I didn't XD Although, I'd probably give them ideas on cool stuff to do with their powers so I think I'd be okay with it in the end! I loved this series so much!! I adore the movie even though some things were changed but just the aesthetic really amazed me. I'm so happy you loved the book!
ReplyDeleteI think with time I would be able to reach that point too. I'm glad you could enjoy both the books and the movie too ;)
DeleteGreat book review as always! I love the sound of this story and the vintage book cover got my heart (that matters too to me... hahaha). Have a great weekend sweetie :)
ReplyDeleteYes, covers can really make me fall in love too. Guilty here :D
DeleteI would be jealous if my best friend had powers and I didn't- but I would still want to know all about them and hope she could do some cool stuff that would work out in my favor. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome review! So glad to hear you liked this one. I read it and enjoyed it too. I haven't seen the movie- yet. Hope it was good!

I like that idea. Trying to be happy for them would be important. I am glad you liked the book too! And I hope you can see the movie soon as well :)
DeleteI'm so glad you liked it! I agree with you: the use of the word 'peculiarity' was so awesome and made the book so much better than if the author had just said they had 'powers'. It really adds to the whole mysterious and old-timey feel of the book too!
ReplyDeleteLaura @BlueEyeBooks
It was the little details which made this book unique and different from all the others!
DeleteI need to read this!
ReplyDeleteI recommend you do c:
DeleteI looked it up on Amazon, and "My Vidalia," also, sounds interesting! Thank you for the contest!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the sound of it!
DeleteI'd probably be too jealous. I really need to read this one, I've been wanting to for ages!
ReplyDeleteMy recent discussion post: http://lovelyparanormalbooks.blogspot.com/2017/02/spoilers-in-reviews-forum-friday-1.html
I hope you can get around to reading it soon :)
DeleteI still need to read this book! I don't really know what I have been waiting for to tell the truth. I am so glad that you enjoyed it and got it in before seeing the movie.
ReplyDeleteIf my best friend had powers and I didn't, then I would let her use her powers for me.
I hope you get around to reading the book soon! I promise, it's a good one :3
DeleteThis is yet another book on my ever growing TBR pile that I want to read and haven't. I know I'm SUPER late to the party, and there's a good chance that I'll never even get to the party, but I'd sure like to go!
ReplyDeleteI hope you do get the chance to though! It's a good read :D
DeleteI love the gothic-y-ness of Miss Peregrine's (and the fact that it's partially set in Wales ofc!) I think the vintage photos was a really clever touch, and really adds to the storytelling.
ReplyDeleteWales represent! And yes, the vintage photos were brilliance :3
DeleteI loved this book. Thank you for a great review.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you could enjoy it too ^.^
DeleteOh I am glad that you enjoyed this. I saw the previews to the movie and thought it looked interesting. I am glad the book is not scary- thanks for the heads up as I don't like to read horror.
ReplyDeleteGood review!
I'm not a huge horror fan either, but reviews assured me that it wasn't like that. A little deceiving, but it's good!
DeleteI'm not sure what I would do if everyone had powers and I didn't. But, I'd like to think that I can hold my own since there is power in kindness, cleverness, love, and all things human. =)
ReplyDeleteYou're so right, Lonna. There's a certain power in just being human all unto itself. <3
DeleteI loved the book and the movie, the sequel is great too.
ReplyDeleteIf all my friends had super powers and I didn't, I'd be pretty bummed to be honest. I'd probably pick something obscure and not easy to prove and say that was mine. So childish, I know!!
I cannot wait to read the sequel! I hope it will be just as good. Hehehe, what a trick!
DeleteI would hang around my best friend as much as possible and enjoy the role of sidekick
ReplyDeleteIt'd still be cool to be around all the action ;)
DeleteDid you know that the author found the pictures and wrote the story around them? I can't find the interview where I originally read about this. It was super interesting. This one will do, though.

Thank you for sharing that with me <3 I think it's so cool that he was able to do it! That takes a certain level of creativity...
DeleteThanks for the chance to win.

Thank you for entering!
DeleteI would hang around my best friends in the hope that some of their powers would magically transfer to me. Great review.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good idea!
DeleteHahaha I completely understand, I also have to read the book before going to see the movie. That's actually why I finally read this book as well!
ReplyDeleteI also thought it would be more horror related, what with all those creepy pictures all over the thing! The pictures are incredibly cool though <3
I'm really glad you enjoyed this!! :)
Lipstick and Mocha
We're so similar in that aspect. I am glad it wasn't so horror related though! I'm not about that genre xD
DeleteI have heard mixed reviews about this one, it looks so creepy with those pictures but I suppose that is the idea!
ReplyDeleteIt's no where near as creepy as it looks though! Don't let that put you off ;)
DeleteI finished this book a few months ago. I also have a mixed feeling about it, but strangely I prefer the movie version hahaha...
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Olivia!
Everyone has their own preferences of things, so in that case I am glad you liked the movie!
DeleteAlso, for some reason I cannot comment on my blog. It just doesn't allow me to press submit comment. Do you know why?
